JNCO Course Report

LAC Hurnen reports on the July Junior NCO course (“Juniors”):

On the first week of the holidays, LAC Hawinkels and I attended the JNCO course at Royal NZ Air Force Base Ohakea.

When we first arrived at Ohakea everyone was nervous, so for the first night we all kept to ourselves in our rooms (if you were a girl) or your dorms if you were a boy. But on the second day once we were introduced to our syndicates I’m pretty sure that no one felt nervous again. For me my syndicate was great and full of friendly, supportive people I really enjoyed being around. We named our syndicate Decans Demons (as we had Sergeant Major Deacon as our cadet staff) – we liked to practice the banana song or help each other if we were struggling. Overall I loved spending time with my syndicate and all the people on the course and it was great seeing Kiera Brodie (an ex-41 Squadron cadet who moved to New Plymouth) again.

We learnt about many things on the course but the main topics were Leadership and how to command a small group, how to present presentations, and how to take a drill lesson. These topics I think will not only help in cadets but in everyday life as well.

I really enjoyed being on Juniors and I think the skills I have learnt and people I have met will stay with me for the rest of my life.
