Corporal Brooker reports on the squadron visit to RNZAF Ohakea Air Base:-
“On the 16th to the 18th of May No. 41 and 49 squadrons visited RNZAF base Ohakea. We got the Friday off school and No. 41 Squadron met at TS Taupo at 7.15am.
We travelled up and all were reunited at the entrance to the base, we were split into groups and got to look inside the A109 and NH90 hangers. After we had got a good look in the helicopters we were given lunch at the mess. The food was amazing throughout the entire weekend.
We then got to go through departments such as the avionics and got to go for a gym sessions with the recruitment trainers. That was one of the most physically demanding hours of my life. We then got to set up our barracks, this went well until the next morning. When room inspection commenced warrant officer fowler was checking the barracks and being picky as ever and flight sergeant and I got our revenge by re-arranging his drawers and short sheeting his bed.
We visited the fire service on base and number 42 squadron where they fly the King Air planes. At nights we got to watch movies. On Sunday we took turns to lead small groups of cadets in a variety of short leadership exercises, before we cleaned our barracks and were sad to leave our new found friends from No. 49 Squadron but were happy to leave the gym behind.”
