Exercise Kiwi marks the end of year for No. 41 Squadron and is the only non-educationally focused and purely fun camp of the year. This year fellow ATC units from Wellington, Lower Hutt, Kapiti, Palmerston North and Sea Cadets from Porirua and Levin were all invited along too. A total of some 120 cadets and officers descended on Waiterere Forest on the evening of Friday the 13th December, to join an advance party who had already been on site for the day to setup the camp kitchen, mess tents and all the tent sleeping accommodation.
The attendees were split into 4 teams – Marines, Navy, Army and Air Force before the exercise commenced. The 4 teams engaged in a number of games and competitions over the next 2 days, breaking only to rehydrate, eat and occasionally catch their breath. Smiles, laughs and fun were not in short supply as the lead changed hands multiple times before the final event saw Team Navy emerge victorious by a margin of only 11 points (less than 1% ahead of 2nd place!).
Congrat’s and thanks to all that made this an awesome event – next year will see yet more cadets invited to attend – 150 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Cadet Forces in New Zealand – someone had better let the kitchen crew know!
