Citizenship Ceremony Report – Monday 27th Feb 2012

Flight Sergeant Kendal Brown was one of the representatives from the unit to attend the latest Citizenship Ceremony at Pataka in Porirua on Monday 27th February 2012, he reports:-

“Every term, No. 41 (City of Porirua) Squadron Air Training Corps is invited by the Porirua City Council to be present at the swearing in of the new citizens.  This is normally attended to by an officer, an NCO and 3 cadets.  It is a unique experience as we form a “guard of honour” for the mayor and officials (usually including a local Member of Parliament) as they approach the stage.  Two cadets will then proceed to hand pot plants to the new citizens upon their completion of the oath.

This is a great time to be noticed by the public as there are more than 50 people present, and the fact that we are in uniform makes us stand out.  After the formalities have concluded, there is a chance to mingle with the guests and new citizens, as well as photo opportunities with the mayor. We sing the national anthem, and toast the Queen.  There is also good food to be had there as well.

If you want to experience the thrill of being in the public eye, as well as adding to your attendance record, then consider going to a Citizenship Parade.  It is quite fun and interesting, as you can meet a lot of new people.  And you can promote 41 Squadron as well, so it’s beneficial for you and the Squadron.”
